The Lighthouse Project

The Lighthouse Project is a $2 billion plan which includes a renovated Nassau Coliseum, a five-star hotel, and hundreds of housing units in the Nassau HUB.  This is a smart growth project that can provide Long Island jobs and affordable housing as well as an entertainment destination.

The Lighthouse Development group, led by Charles Wang, is planning to build 2,300 apartments and condominiums.  20% of the housing units, approximately 460 units overall, will be dedicated to affordable housing.  There are no specifications as to whether the affordable housing component will be on-site at the development, or built at another location. YIMBY is asking to have the affordable housing component on-site at the project, spread out through the development, and in-perpetuity.

At public hearings regarding the project in the summer of 2008, over 100 people showed up to support YIMBY and affordable housing stating, "Yes In My Back Yard!"

AARP, Long Island Jobs with Justice, Mental Health Association of Nassau County, People’s for Affordable Housing Coalition of Hempstead, and Sustainable Long Island were among the organizations that had attended the hearing with their members voicing support of affordable housing for this project.  "We support it, but we want 20% affordable housing and we want it on site," said Marion Schurade, 71, of North Merrick, a member of the League of Women Voters.

William Stoner, Associate State Director of AARP, said, "We at AARP enthusiastically support the 20% affordable housing within this project and encourage the developers to be required to mix the affordable units among the other units rather than have a separate section for the 460 potential affordable units.”

Vanessa Crilly, Director of Long Island Jobs with Justice, exclaimed, "Our workforce, including teachers and fire fighters, need affordable housing to live in.  Long Island Jobs with Justice says YIMBY all the way!”

If you support affordable housing on the Lighthouse Project, send an email or letter to the Town Supervisor, Kate Murray supporting the affordable housing on-site of the development.
